Since the 1990’s Elmiron has been prescribed to its patients. Some may have been using it for over 15 years without grave symptoms until now. The medical term or the actual chemical compund is called Pentosan Polysulfate (PPS). The eye condition patients were suffering from is called Interstitial Cystitis (IC), for which they were taking Elmiron.
Unfortunately, prolonged long term use of this drug has allegedly caused the following conditions according to Plaintiffs suing for their injuries:
- Blurred Vision
- Difficulty Reading
- Dark Spots
As of 2020 [September], approximately 50 cases are pending in litigation, but millions of people have taken the drug to treat their Interstitial Cystitis. This type of case is still in its nascent stages since 2018, when medical experts discovered that chronic use of Emiron caused Pigmentary Maculopathy.
Anatomically, the macula is the back end of the eye’s Retina. The Retina senses light and sends a message to the brain in order for you to see. When the Retina is damaged, it can cause vision problems. Now it is alleged, Elmiron has caused blindness in many due to this retinal damage.
The Defendant: Janssen Pharmaceuticals is a division of Johnson & Johnson, and it has been sued to compensate victims from this pharmaceutical drug.
These types of cases should be legally addressed immediately so that a lawyer can review the merits of your case. If you have been diagnosed with Pigmentary Maculopathy within a year of cessation of use or are currently taking Elmiron and are being treated by a physician for Maculopathy, you will want to know your legal rights concerning the filing of a lawsuit.
